Why Health Coaching?
Lori loves helping people through massage therapy, but her interests have always included a variety of natural treatments paths. And as a coach, she works with the whole person – the emotional, spiritual, as well as physical sides.
In her own case, a big improvement began with certain changes in her diet.
Physician Heal Thyself
One of the things Lori learned was that she didn’t digest proteins very well. So now her diet includes easier-to-digest proteins, and natural supplements that assist with the process. She also gave up nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, mushrooms) because they contribute to inflammation.
It was tough at first, but now seems normal.
She says digestive balance is crucial: “If you’re not digesting your food properly, you can eat all kinds of expensive fruits and vegetables and supplements, but all you’re doing is producing expensive waste.”
Science in Nature
Accepting the professional advice of someone else is not something you should have to do on faith alone. Lori’s platform for health coaching is certified – her recommendations are scientific and data driven.
A few years ago she earned certification on Integrative Nutrition, and she’s currently working on a certification as a digestive enzyme practitioner through the Loomis Institute.
One of the things she offers is urinalysis – and the labs from this reveal what enzymes the body needs to maximize digestive health.
Custom Plan, Designed for You
Lori’s health coaching is based in science – but it’s applied in a very customized, personal way.
The relationship she has with each client is different, because each person is unique. She doesn’t work from a template list of ‘Dos and Don’ts.’
“I begin my coaching by meeting people where they are,” she says.
The first step is to build trust. Lori listens first:
People will tell their stories, but not in the way they think. By listening, I often uncover places they might self-sabotage, or dwell on negative self-talk. Then together we figure out how to address those things and turn them around so the body can heal.
Practical Steps
Real change comes in increments – not overnight. And there has to be a plan.
- When Lori recommends giving up sweets, she provides suggestions for alternatives.
- If you have problems with certain temptations, she helps you plan to say out of temptation’s path.
- If you have trouble over-indulging on snacks, she helps suggest how to pre-package portions so you don’t eat too much in one sitting.
What’s Involved with Health Coaching?
Because change takes time, Lori’s coaching program begins with a commitment of 6 months.
During that time, you come in every two weeks to (among other things) set goals, discuss progress, get recommendations, share information, go over results, pick up new information, share recipes
As for the latter, Lori often provides samples of what she recommends. She may pass along a little bag of quinoa with a new recipe, for example.
“People are reluctant to make an investment in something they’re unfamiliar with,” she says. “That’s perfectly normal. So providing a sample gives them a chance to ‘try before you buy’ and discover what they like.”
